Best Things to Do
in Shanghai

Start with the river, make time for the old streets, and give the bigger outings a day of their own. Group nearby places together rather than crossing the city for every stop.

The Bund & Lujiazui

Two sides of Shanghai, one river between them

Walk the Bund for historic facades and the towers across the Huangpu. For a different perspective, cross to Lujiazui and explore the east-bank waterfront; add an observation deck if the weather is clear.

Plan it wellChoose one riverbank for sunset. Allow time to cross by metro instead of treating both promenades as one continuous walk.

Gardens & old-city streets

Yuyuan Garden

A quieter garden within the busy old city

Step inside the classical garden for rockeries, ponds and carefully framed views. Outside, the surrounding bazaar is a separate experience: lively shopping streets, snack stops and traditional-style buildings.

Plan it wellCheck the garden's own admission and opening details. Walking around the bazaar does not mean you have entered the garden.

Wukang Road & the leafy lanes

Make room for a slower Shanghai afternoon

Explore the Wukang–Anfu Road area for old residences, small shops and café breaks. For another outing, visit Xintiandi's restored shikumen lanes. These are separate street clusters, so leave room for travel between them.

Plan it wellMany historic buildings remain homes. Enjoy them from public streets and keep residential entrances clear.

A dedicated day out

Shanghai Disneyland

Give the magic a day of its own

Set aside a full day for the park rather than adding it to a downtown sightseeing loop. Review the current ticket, reservation and identification requirements on the resort's official website before purchasing.

Plan it wellPlan your return journey before the evening show. A stay near the resort suits a park-focused visit; central sightseeing involves additional travel.

Visit the garden, then pause for lunch nearby. Leave room for queues and crowds.

Arriving & Getting
Around Shanghai

Begin with your exact airport terminal or railway station, then work backwards from your accommodation address. The fastest train is not always the simplest door-to-door journey.

Airport arrival

Pudong or Hongqiao?

Compare airport rail, metro and taxi options for your destination. The Airport Link Line connects the two airport hubs; it is not a direct train to every downtown neighborhood. Check terminal access and operating hours.

Metro, cards & the final walk

Shanghai Metro supports eligible contactless bank cards under its Tap to Ride program. Check card compatibility and use the same card or device to enter and exit. Keep a backup payment method and save your station exit.

First-time essentials

Plan the whole journey

For a day trip, check the full station name, attraction location and return train. For a late arrival, save your address in Chinese and confirm check-in instructions before leaving the airport or station.

03 · Before You Travel

A little preparation.
A much easier arrival.

Use current official guidance for entry, payment and registration. Citywide advice does not establish what a particular home or booking channel supports.

Entry & travel documents

Entry conditions depend on your passport, purpose, route and dates. Verify the rules that apply to you before committing to non-refundable travel. Keep the identity document required for your bookings available.

A few useful answers

Before you choose
your Shanghai base

Should I stay in Puxi or Pudong?

Puxi is west of the Huangpu and puts many historic street districts on your side of the river. Pudong is east of the river and includes Lujiazui and the Disney resort area, which are far apart. Compare the exact address and metro connections with your daily plans rather than choosing by riverbank alone.

How many days should I plan?

Three days is a suggested starting point for central sights and neighborhoods. Add a separate day for Disneyland or a day trip, and allow more time if you prefer museums, slower walks or a relaxed arrival day.

Can I assume every home accepts international guests?

Check the specific home's guest requirements, identity-document process and registration arrangements before booking. Also confirm arrival instructions and who to contact if your travel is delayed.

What should I check before paying for a stay?

Confirm the exact location, bedrooms and beds, guest capacity, stairs or lift access, facilities, total price and currency, deposit, cancellation deadline and check-in method. Use the conditions shown for your selected home and dates.

Find a Shanghai stay that fits your plans.

Choose your route first. Then compare neighborhoods and homes, and check the details that matter to your group.
